Christianity and the West: The Necessary Precursor for the Evolution of Human Liberty
Without Christianity and its attendant valuation of the individual as a unique and priceless Child of the Living God, we should know nothing of liberty as we now apprehend it. While the Pagan Fathers of the Ancient World labored hard in the philosophical mines searching for the Good Life, it is in Christ that the rock solid foundation of systematic human value draws its magnificent articulation.
In Christendom, the long chain of theologians and philosophers: Augustine, Aquinas, Montesquieu, Locke, Burke- to say nothing of our Founding Giants, tease out and amplify the essential ordered liberty that had eluded other civilizations.
The abolition of slavery, the moral and political equality of men, the limited construct of the state, all were deduced from Judeo Christian principles- and we should be impoverished beyond recovery should the day ever come when we abandon our priceless inheritance for a mess of worldly pottage.
